Koi Anatomy

Before considering any health-related problems to which koi may be subject, it is vital to understand a little bit about their basic anatomy. After all, few people would consider tackling a faulty car engine without having some idea of how an engine is put together. In the same way that understanding the structure of an engine and how it works enables a mechanic to detect and repair any faults, so appreciating how koi are built and what makes them work is a necessary first step in tackling any problems associated with their health.

This diagram considers the body shape of the koi and then the very basic anatomy in two natural categories: the external anatomy, which includes all the visible parts of the body; and the internal anatomy, which embrases the organs, tissues and the systems that connect them inside the body.
